Pregnancy Test (Part III)

It is possible that the urine of a woman, even when pregnant, does not contain yet a high level of this hormone?

It is not only possible, it is normal. It is the most common situation.

Why is that?

We said before that when a woman becomes pregnant, it is possible to find the presence of a specific hormone (HGC) in her body.
Because this hormone at the beginning, is present in such small quantities, so it does not reach the urine yet.

A pregnancy test based on blood samples should detected the hormone, but a pregnancy test using urine probably will fails. Especially a low sensitivity one.
Usually, it is in those first days after conception, when you want to do a pregnancy test.

I'm not saying that the pregnancy tests that are sold in pharmacies will fail for sure.
I just to remind you that you will need a very sensitive pregnancy test, or follow the safest way: which is a blood test done to detect a possible pregnancy.

In the previous post we said that any pregnancy test, either through urine or through a blood sample, try to detect the presence of some specific hormone (CGH). If this hormone is founded, it means that the woman is pregnant.
In that sense, all pregnancy tests are reliable.
If the hormone is detected, the woman is pregnant, and level of reliability of the pregnancy tests in these cases is very high.

The only times when it is possible to discuss how reliable are these pregnancy tests, is when a pregnancy test gives a negative result: It does not detect the hormone in the urine of women.

This can mean any of the following situations:

1 .- The woman is not pregnant
2 .- The women are pregnant but the pregnancy test, for whatever reason, could not detect the hormone.
3 .- The woman is pregnant, the pregnancy test did not has any failure, but the woman does not even have a high level of hormone in her urine, even when pregnant.

There are two types of pregnancy tests: the one that takes place at home with a pregnancy test bought from a pharmacy and the other are those made from blood samples.

Which is more reliable?

Types of pregnancy tests:

I briefly explain the difference between the two methods for pregnancy tests.
There is a hormone that appears in a woman's body only if she is pregnant. So both methods of detection of pregnancy (pregnancy tests performed on urine and pregnancy tests performed on blood) try to identify the presence of this hormone.

Once we have understood that eachs pregnancy test work trying to detect the presence of this hormone in a woman's body, we can better understand which method is better.

On the one hand, not all pregnancy test products sold in pharmacies have the same level of sensitivity.
Some pregnancy test products have a higher sensitivity. So they can more efficiently detect the presence of this hormone in urine.

This is important because the amount of hormone in the urine of women increased from conception until the third month of pregnancy constantly. But in the early days of pregnancy (which is when you want to know if you are pregnant, so you will use a pregnancy test), the presence of this hormone in urine is very low.

Therefore, if you plan to do the pregnancy test, when you only have 3 to 5 days delay in the menstrual period, then you should opt for a pregnancy test with high sensitivity.
